Making the most of everything Moseley has to offer

Although we want you to enjoy the many state-of-the-art facilities on-site at The Shires, from time to time you may want to venture out of the Village into the close-by, highly desirable neighbourhood of Moseley. With its independent boutiques and cafes, Michelin-starred restaurant and numerous parks and green spaces, it’s easy to see why Moseley features favourably in popularity polls time after time.

To ensure you maximise your time at the retirement village in Moseley, we’ve compiled our top tips of the best experiences to be had in the area and our choices of where to go to make sure you’re fully sustained for the duration of the outing.

From Vintage Clothes, to the Encore Designer Dress Agency and any other dress style in between, Moseley is a shopper’s paradise. With a good mix of independent stores and high street favourites, be sure to include a visit to one of the bookshops and the amazing The Jungle Club Plant Shop! (which even has it’s own little coffee shop, Cafephilia).

Moseley Bog nature reserve is a great place to enjoy some fresh air and beautiful countryside and Cannon Hill Park is also right on the doorstep. Take a walk around the Swan Boating Lake, play some tennis or mini golf or just watch the world go by with a cuppa in the Garden Tea Rooms. The Shire Country Park and Sarehole Mill are also a stone’s throw from The Shires and are both well worth a visit.`≥/

There are a further eleven acres of peaceful parkland to enjoy at Moseley Park where world class events such as the Jazz Festival, Folk Festival and Arts Festival take place in summer months.

If you’re a fan of sport, then The Shires is perfectly positioned for you! Spend an afternoon watching your local teams at Moseley Rugby Club and Moseley Cricket Club or, if you prefer to play yourself, walk, drive and putt your way around the delightful Moseley Golf Club.

Moseley is well-known in the West Midlands for its wide range of culinary offerings. Whether you are looking for a trendy café or a fine dining establishment, you won’t need to wander far – however, you can travel the world through cuisines from Italy to India and America to Thailand and Malaysia in a matter of minutes!

If a celebration is on the cards, then Carter’s of Moseley is a must. This Michelin-starred restaurant is independently owned and serves modern British food from solely British shores. It’s the perfect choice for a special occasion.

For something a little different, Zindaya is a perfect option. Bringing the streets of Delhi or markets of Mumbai straight to Moseley, Zindaya combines fresh, flavoursome ingredients and serves them up in a fun, vibrant atmosphere.

Family-run, Italian restaurant, Ponte di Lengo, is a great idea if authentic pasta is what you’re in the mood for, although you’d better go hungry as the portions are big! There’s also a pizza menu if you fancy something less formal.

If you’re looking for just drinks or bar snacks, then Moseley has an array of choices available.  The Fighting Cocks is loved by locals and has a wonderfully friendly, welcoming vibe. One Trick Pony has a funky industrial-saloon interior design and is a true social hub with screens showing sporting events. The Prince of Wales boasts three bars, a heated marquee and even has its own tiki bar, so it’s easy to see why it was awarded the coveted BII (British Institute of Innkeepers) award.  Finally, if you’re feeling at a loss on a Saturday afternoon, The Village has a bottomless brunch that’s well worth trying.

We’ve touched on just a few of the many bars and restaurants Moseley has to offer. There’s also a great selection of cafes and coffee shops where you can meet friends or just stop for a quick bite while out shopping.

Moseley also has several supermarkets, bakeries and a butcher. Alternatively visit one of the monthly Moseley Farmer’s Markets held in the village centre on the final Saturday of every month and return to The Shires laden with goodies to cook at home!

And if all of this isn’t enough to occupy your day out, then Birmingham City Centre is just 3 miles up the road and easily accessible by car, bus or train from The Shires.
